Working for FCA allows me to see God at work in many areas all at the same time. It’s hard to pick something to share with you because God is that diligent at doing amazing, maximum-effort things in our lives for his glory and our good. FCA is a student-led ministry. We focus on engaging coaches and athletes with the gospel, equipping them with the word of God, and empowering them to go make disciples! Student leadership just doesn’t come with a snap of the finger though. It takes investment, time, discipleship, relationship building, and prayer for God to move in the hearts of our kids so they can have a heart of obedience. This school year, I have already seen so much fruit from years of investing in our athletes at Williamsburg Academy. This past spring, I took on the role of a “character coach” for JV and Varsity softball at WA. This means I would spend time with the team on and off the field, show up to games with a devotion, pray with them, and empower them to play for God’s glory and not theirs. Befoe the first game of the season, I had lunch time devotion with the JV team. I gave out note cards and asked them to write their favorite bible verse on one side. On the other side, I asked them to write why it was their favorite. I explained the power of influence they have on each other and the power they carry with the Holy Spirit. We are never too young or too old to share our love for Jesus with others. My challenge for the team was to have someone share their card with each other and the other teams every game of the season. We looked at the game schedule. I said, “Three games this week! Who’s our first three volunteers? Including tonight.” No hands went up for a minute…then one said, “I’ll do it tonight.” Keep in mind that was only 5 hours away from this moment. We clapped for her bravery and 2 more volunteered for the rest of the games that week. The game was away and I didn’t get to attend, but man did I get texts and pictures! The pictures showed Sophia Jacobs standing with not just her team, but the other team, in a circle sharing her love for God’s word. Praise God for how he can empower us to do more than we could ever do on our own! After that first week, the team was fighting over what games they each wanted to share. A fire was started by one person stepping out of their comfort zone and choosing to be bold for Christ. It was an incredibly fulfilling role, for me personally, to be on this team. Usually, I am the one sharing God’s word and praying with all the teams. I got to be “invited” into those circles now just to listen, smile, and encourage. As a follower of Jesus and their sister in Christ, there really is nothing like watching a youngperson get excited about sharing Jesus. It fills my cup. Now, the girls that were on that softball team areplaying volleyball. Before I could even start a lunch time bible study with the team, I was once again “invited” instead. Preslee Cooper texts, “Mrs. Cameron, we will be hosting a pre game devotion in the library at 2:45. Whitney and I are leading and would love for you to come if you have time. ”Every home game, this team is organizing, communicating, and declaring they ARE going to make time for Jesus as a team. They are empowering each other and pairing up so they are not alone. They made a prayer board for the locker room. They have had PowerPoints, games, activities, all going with their devotions….they have really shown me up because I definitely have never made a PowerPoint for my devotions with them. God is so good. His fruit blooms at the perfect times. God has taught me and empowered me just as much as I have tried to empower them. My challenge that I leave you with today is this: Are you empowering your team (your family) like these 12 year olds are with each other? Volunteering, communicating, organizing time, and declaring y’all WILL open God’s word together. If they can do this on their own, so can you with the power of the Holy Spirit.
